Topic 2: “Performance” and “Authenticity” in Digital Life: Self-Presentation and Social Relationships on Social Media

Core Question: On social media, are we expressing our true selves more authentically, or are we engaging in a carefully curated “performance”? How does this new mode of interaction impact social trust and interpersonal relationships?

Brainstorming:

1. It is not opposition but a continuum
   • Continuum is a concept from psychiatry. Such music has 5 tones between Do and Xi.
2. Real life still has a continuum between performance and authenticity.
   • Everyone have a mask.
3. People always cheating themselves and escape thinking.
   • Maybe people don’t understand themselves very well. They don’t know is that performance or authenticity.
