class day 33

  1. The strategic importance of the Gallipoli peninsula was recognised by both sides, leading to fierce warfare.
  2. The troops were subjected to harsh environmental conditions, leading to high rates of disease.
  3. The harsh terrain and length of warfare were underestimated before the campaign began.
  4. All the supplies the troops needed had to be carried by hand up the rocky hills.
  5. Supplies and ammunition were expected to be sufficient for a short campaign, but the prolonged fighting drained resources quickly.
