Class day 10

In DEC 25, we want to help you develop the language tools that will make you a confident writer and speaker. We will do this through the ‘Language focus’ section of the ‘Listening to read and write’ and the ‘Reading to Speak and Write lessons’. In these lessons you will learn about grammar in a context and also practice using this grammar for speaking and writing. On Wednesdays, after the ‘Reading to Speak’ lesson, you will be asked to reflect on your Grammar diary.

Week 1 Grammar focus for this week: noun phrases
Reflecting on specific grammar What specific grammar structure did we focus on this week?  Noun phrases: They consist of a head noun, which is expanded by adding words before or after it.  These are called pre- and post- modifiers. I now know that I can improve my writing by adding extra information about a single noun. I now also know that I can use noun phrases as the subject or object of a sentence, and this makes my writing academic. Write an example sentence from the lesson. These coastal areas are a favourite place for surfers.   This example has a noun phrase as the subject and also as the objectNoticing grammar in context Write down a sentence you heard or read this week that uses a grammar structure we’ve studied. Why do you think the speaker/writer used it? Prepositional phrases to make a noun phrase: I noticed that these are very common.  Here are a few examples from Davis (2024): a big part of daily life the shores of this big island early settlers from other places Here are some examples from Miller (2020): a big country with great weather a favorite place for surfers a common gathering place for families on weekends.
Using grammar in speaking/ writing Did you use this grammar structure in any written or spoken assignments or messages this week? Copy an example. I looked back at my writing at the end of Week 1, and I saw that I used noun phrases a few times. Examples: ………………………………….
………………………………….
Keeping track of mistakes Write down a grammar mistake you made this week and the correction. Why do you think you made this mistake?  I made a mistake with my sentence structure by writing a fragment instead of a whole sentence.  This was my incorrect sentence: “Because it helps people think that they belong to a community.” I made the mistake because I forgot that if you use a conjunction like “Because”, this is a dependent clause, and you need to add an independent clause to complete the sentence correctly. It would have been OK if I had written “This is because”
